Takeaway is a short documentary film that explores Chinese diasporic stories in the catering sector, through my parent’s lived experience. The narrative follows their daily routine: opening, prepping, working, and closing. Each stage delves deeper into their lives, exploring their stories through archival photos and conversations, creating an honest line of communication about their past. My intent is to normalise conversations between migrant parents by reframing their mindset that their stories are worth telling. The film aims to resonate with other diasporas, not just the Chinese community.

Takeaway (外賣)
Research and process
"Takeaway (外賣)" was filmed at my parents' takeaway business located in East Yorkshire between the months of April and May 2024. Filmed using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with the help of my younger sisters. The short film features my parents and other family members as they work a normal day at the takeaway. This project is essentially a family production.
