A spiral structured metal framework with bread expanded into organic form inside it.

Expressing her long-standing passion for bread-making, Cindy’s collection “Rising” explores the constantly changing form of homemade bread, which she has dehydrated. The shaping of the metal bands is inspired by the actions of kneading, stretching and folding which occur throughout the bread-making process. Exploring the movement of its rising, she allows the bread to take its own form around the metal. She transforms bread into beautiful, wearable and fluctuating jewellery. Her passion and connection offer a personal perspective and a new take on craftsmanship.

Bette’s work takes objects with an intrinsic monetary value – coins – and uses them to create a series of artworks that, in this transmogrified form, subvert our ideas about true merit. By becoming part of her process, the jewellery takes on a worth so much greater than the coins on their own. Her detailed analysis of the imagery of coinage makes a playful, tongue-in-cheek reflection on true value; her understanding of the properties of the metal used in money gives her a personal mastery in the use of coins as art.

Change/Relics for the Future

This project explores the idea of visualising everyday repetitive noises through weaving and coding. How can we translate intangible and abstract sounds into physical forms through weaving? Hand-woven pieces are produced alongside an interactive app to create unique weaving patterns from sound inputs.
 
The inspiration of this project is drawn from the mundane and repetitive noises that permeate our domestic spaces - from the morning alarm to the rhythmic hum of the washing machine through to brushing our teeth before bed. By personally recording and processing my own everyday noises, a visual imagery and jacquard weaving patterns are produced through coding to create physical designs in the form of weaving.
 
This project also encourages ordinary people without previous knowledge of weaving or access to a loom to create weaving patterns solely from sound. This is in the hope of promoting and raising more awareness to weaving.

SEMIOTICS OF SOUND

This project is based around the mutual understanding of each other&#39;s “colour vision” - the colours that are seen by people with colour blindness and the colours seen by those without. One in 12 boys and one in 200 girls in the world are colourblind.
 
I am surrounded by many people who are colourblind. Colour-tests and interviews with those who are colour-blind helped me to gain a better understanding of colourblindness. I incorporated the pleats and 3D shapes into my work, which represented each side as the colour that the colourblind sees and those without colour-blindness see. Colourblind people can use colourblind glasses to experience the world how those without colour-blindness see it.
 
I created this project with the hope that people who are colourblind can enjoy the artwork with normal colour vision, and that people with normal colour vision will become more aware of colourblindness.

Cuemái is a design project that redefines Tequila waste as a resource for the textile industry. Creating a bio-based pigment and a yarn from the Tequila byproducts. 

 Tequila is a symbol of identity for Mexican culture, and it has become one of Mexico’s second-largest agro-industrial exports in 2022. Last year 598.7 million liters were produced and 401.4 million liters were exported. Now, Tequila is competing in sales with whisky and vodka in the USA, being the first consumer of Tequila with 321,550,966 liters in 2023, and the UK is in fifth place with 5,484,841 liters.
 
Through strategic partnerships with Tequila distilleries, chemistry experts, and textile mills, I aim to lead the transition toward a process minimizing environmental impact and fostering economic growth and cultural preservation in tequila-producing regions. 

 Cuemái strives to implement a closed loop process in an industry that holds significance to Mexican culture and economy by converting its waste into resources. It does so by transforming blue agave remnants into fibers, yarn, and pigments, leaving a minimal footprint on the environment. These materials can be combined or used separately to create fabrics and garments.

This project aims to advance the temperature monitoring systems utilised for the early detection of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) through the application of Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLCs). The proposed system leverages the temperature-sensitive properties of TLCs to detect subtle thermal variations and asymmetries across corresponding areas of both feet, which are crucial indicators during the incipient stages of ulceration. Importantly, this technology seeks to rectify the shortcomings of extant diabetic foot assessment tools that exhibit suboptimal performance on darker skin tones, thereby ensuring accurate monitoring for patients irrespective of skin colour. By using TLC technology with a focus on asymmetry detection, this system aims to offer a user-friendly, non-invasive, and effective method for diabetic patients to monitor their foot health at home. Unlike conventional temperature monitoring systems that depend on electronic sensors and intricate software, this project proposes a more straightforward, cost-effective solution—a TLC foot mat—that diminishes the dependency on advanced technological infrastructures, thereby broadening accessibility and simplifying usability for patients across diverse demographic and socioeconomic strata.

 The fashion industry generates around 13 million tonns of fabric waste every year, with 15% of fabric wasted during pre-production. Most debates and issues around textile waste focus on used clothing, yet a deeper problem lies in the tonns of scraps produced from the manufacturing process.
 
Welcome to the future sweets shop where scraps are as cherished as the most exquisite confectioneries. The FabriCandy project introduces a new way to rethink how scraps can be part of our body - by consuming and digesting it! With the help of different bacterial enzymes, plant-based fibers can be decomposed into sugary glucose, which is an important source of energy for all organisms. Both garments and scraps can become nutrients for the human body, with fabric waste becoming a new food and energy source.

Descending into the microbial world of bacteria awaits the misunderstood community of Janthinobacterium lividum, a collection of unified cells with the ability to create shades of violet pigment. This collection of biological curiosities for the future of tattooing presents how we can break down the stigma surrounding bacteria by embracing the unknown and unusual.
 
As thousands of harmful substances in tattoo inks have been banned in the European Union, many of which are still being used in other parts of the world, tattoo artists are in dire need of the evolution of safer inks. Through collaboration with bacteria comes a new kind of tattoo ink, which eliminates the fear of harmful chemicals being pierced into our skin, as well as aiding our bodies&#39; defence against diseases such as cancers and infections, as an alternative to current medical treatments.
 
Creating a voice for these talented organisms through a bacterial language chart, one that is translated through the tattoos on our bodies, where the pigments they have gifted to us can protect and heal our bodies as they thrive, flowering under the skin.

SKIN FLOWERS

Zero Waste System 01 eliminates fashion waste by growing bio-based textiles directly into garment shapes using molds. 

The fashion industry’s conventional manufacturing methods inevitably generate enormous textile waste from pattern cutting and plotting. Production scraps can comprise of 15% of discarded textiles, amounting to millions of tons yearly. This exploration of alternative fabrication methods is inspired by foam’s structural integrity and gas-infused expansion. By adapting foaming techniques with bioplastics and bioleathers, textiles can be grown in molds shaped as garment patterns, minimizing waste-producing steps of plotting and cutting. This methodology bridges materials science and textile design to rethink fabric production. Rather than cutting patterns that generate scraps, controlled expansion in a pre-shaped mold would allow direct formation of textile pieces. The materials would rise into form just as bread dough fills its baking tin. This could substantially reduce textile waste compared to current manufacturing methods, and offer custom-tailored textile properties. This is a call for a paradigm shift in production techniques.

Zero Waste System : Expandable Porous Material

PulpMaker is a fully mechanical 3D paper pulp printer designed to provide modest yet meaningful benefits for the educational and recreational needs of children living in temporary camps, especially in the aftermath of crises such as natural disasters and wars. It utilizes widely available waste material, paper, as its primary resource, allowing for the creation of various objects in a completely sustainable manner without the need for electricity. PulpMaker aims to offer valuable support in STEM education, enhancing the cognitive and practical development of children while also addressing their needs for entertainment and play, thereby having a positive social impact.
 
Inspired by traditional 3D printing technology, PulpMaker has been redesigned to operate entirely mechanically, eliminating the need for electrical power. Users first add the prepared paper pulp and then turn the crank handle to activate the mechanism, which creates three-dimensional objects. Since the target users are children, it is designed to be as simple and user-friendly as possible. By transforming waste paper into a valuable resource, PulpMaker addresses waste management and sustainability issues while also providing a renewable material for printing.

In today&#39;s fast-paced world, our food choices are heavily influenced by our emotions and prices. However, overconsumption has become prevalent, and with the rapid growth in population, the demand for food and nutrition is set to surge dramatically by 2050. Addressing this impending nutrition crisis necessitates innovative and sustainable solutions. One promising approach is the integration of eco-friendly food olla containers. These containers are designed to slowly release essential micronutrients into cooked food during serving and storage. This method not only enhances the nutritional value of meals but also supports the optimization of gut microbiomes, which is crucial for overall health. By seamlessly fitting into our busy lifestyles, these nutrient-enriching containers offer a practical way to improve dietary quality without significant changes to daily routines. This sustainable approach has the potential to meet the rising nutritional demands while promoting a healthier population and a more balanced ecosystem.

GUT-FEELING +

weGENERATION is a critical solutions game aimed at individuals and practitioners who engage with clothing and textiles.
 
The ‘we’ in weGENERATION reveals the collaborative nature of the game. Connection is a fundamental aspect to regeneration, which is why the goal of the game is for players to work together to generate radical solutions collectively.
 
To enable a regenerative textiles sector there is a need for deep understanding through embodied education to shift perspectives and create long-term change. Since all parts of life works in cycles and in systems, textiles from its ecological source through to its human involvement has every opportunity to be regenerative. weGENERATION helps players to connect the inseparable relationships between micro and macro systems within new speculative worlds that can enable regenerative practices in the contemporary world.
 
Players co-create the outcome and disruptive solutions within the game by adding their own &#39;VALUE&#39; card at the beginning of play. These values are used within the game to lead decisions, and also as a secondary function to be used as qualitative data analysis. The qualitative data analysis will be collected and will contribute to a research project to explore what motivations and tipping points could lead to change within the fashion industry.
 
To outscale the game and collect more diverse solutions and ideas, weGENERATION has also been produced as an online webgame collaboratively with MA Game Designer Kenny Deeble.
