Inspired by corals’ symbiotic relationship with microorganisms, Christopher Bellamy has developed a contemporary living material that encapsulates bioluminescent microalgae. The material lives for at least six months, emitting light in response to touch and needing only sunlight in return.

These unseen members of our ecosystems, essential to both nature and humanity, are threatened by relentless pollution, and human activities.This project aims to spotlight the overlooked microscopic majority, inviting us to reconsider our bond with these vital organisms.

Microbial Oasis: Architecture for Microorganisms

This Bio-Fender combines bioremediation with British canal culture by incorporating oil spill cleanup capabilities into boat fenders used by narrowboats. Given the prevalence of fuel oil spills in canal waters, there is a pressing need for solutions that align with the ecological ethos while maintaining the functionality for boat protection.

The Money Trees project aims to increase the value and autonomy of urban trees in London, reducing the likelihood of their removal. By utilising community art, activism and technology to transform how we economically value trees, thereby reducing the chances of them being cut down.

Designed under the constraints of an STI test kit, The Buffer Zone is a space for diagnostic care, sex education and family planning advice for people whose experiences are marginalised in sexual health care provision.

“ADHD in the City” investigates the habitual exclusion of ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) people within the context of London’s ‘accessible’ public spaces - exploring current deficiencies of neurodivergent spatial inclusivity. Drawing insight from personal experience, critical play theory and psychological studies; the inquiry considers conventional commuter spaces as a testing bed for creating moments of sanctuary that optimise ADHD characteristics by valorising playful reinterpretation above shame or displacement. While seeing greater social reward for productivity and ‘hustle culture’, the call for more neurologically inclusive spaces is louder than ever.

This project aims to imagine and design a future where reciprocal care is the foundation of our collective existence and economy through an amalgamation of intergenerational knowledge, lived experience and feminist principles.This project outlines a design guide for an itinerant model of maternity care for women during pregnancy and after childbirth. This offers a strategy for community-led healthcare provision in the demise of the welfare state and places care in the most public point of urban space, the high street. Vacant buildings are carefully adapted to reposition the high street as an important site of social and civic life. A vacant building on Hackney Road acts as an incubator to test the spatial configurations and wider networks necessary for maternity care for vulnerable women. Due to the lack of adequate services, this site acts as the first instance of an easily adaptable and repeatable model, inspired by Sure Start Centres. This is of utmost urgency given the recent Birth Trauma Enquiry, published by Parliament on Monday 13th May, which calls for an overhaul of the UK’s maternity and postnatal care.

Driven by a fascination with regenerative design, I created the Symbiotic Neighbourhood to promote collaboration and innovation at the intersection of community engagement and social-ecological governance. Unlike sustainable design, which aims to minimise harm, regenerative design seeks to create positive impacts by enhancing the health and resilience of ecosystems and communities. It involves designing in harmony with natural processes and integrating principles. This Symbiotic Neighbourhood connects local ecosystems and communities, revitalising the human-nature relationship in urban environments.
