UN Ocean Decade Challenge 10

The ocean has been trying to communicate its pain for years, through rising tides, dwindling fish stocks, and coral bleaching; but humanity hasn’t always listened. ‘A Date with the Ocean’ is an unscripted experiment that prompts its participants to consider how they could forge a happy, harmonious and symbiotic relationship with the Ocean.

A Date with the Ocean

Anthrophony is a multi-sensory installation, depicting the impact of sound pollution in the deep sea. Using cyanotype photography, we captured sound waves in water, showcasing varying intensities of ripples on a series of cyanotype booklets, allowing viewers to read while observing the images.

The Blue Resurgence is a 270 immersive experience that celebrates the findings of the 2020 study on the South Georgia blue whale resurgence. For the first time in 50 years, their numbers are rising once again. This is a celebration of successful climate activism and a sobering reminder of how easily we could lose this progress lest we regress.

Deep Sea Dispatch is a story-based adventure game set at three ocean depths. The characters deliver packages through the ocean from the Antarctic sea ice, where phytoplankton is consumed to great depths and where marine snow falls. The bespoke soundtrack enhances the player&#39;s impression of the aquatic environments, and carefully designed characters and backgrounds create an inviting and enjoyable game.

The &#39;Sea It&#39; Project utilizes QR codes on posters and interactive stickers to educate participants about the ocean&#39;s profound influence on everyday products. By scanning QR codes, users discover the marine ingredients in their belongings and affix corresponding stickers to items. These stickers serve as tangible reminders of the ocean&#39;s importance in their lives.

Sea It

Lumi is a digital platform that utilises AI to generate unique, hybrid deep-sea creatures, highlighting the possibilities of what creatures exist in the depths of the ocean, yet to be discovered. Our aim is to shine a light on the darkness of the deep sea. By leaning into this unexplored aspect of the ocean, Lumi sparks curiosity and stimulates users’ imaginations, allowing them to take part in this speculation about the possibilities of what’s out there. The platform’s unexpected imagery and intriguing colours veers away from the typical ‘big blue’ visuals associated with traditional ocean communication.

We created an Instagram account, 70% Salty, aimed at Gen Z Londoners. We created reel content, a longer-form interview-style video, carousel posts and articles that informed Londoners of the importance of the ocean, even in the city, in an entertaining but informative way.

Together, our team has developed a pilot concept for an iOS app called Swell. Designed to empower individuals to improve their holistic well-being, Swell helps users foster an intentional connection with water by incorporating the ocean into their daily lives. Based on research in behavior change methodologies, ecological principles, and the Blue Mind Theory which highlights the positive effects of water on human health, Swell was developed to “bring the ocean” to Gen Z populations residing in urban ocean cities who perceive a lack of access to coastal environments, while simultaneously expanding app users’ understanding of the ocean&#39;s critical role in furthering the health of our planet.
