Shape-shifters in Trance

Images of the model in a green dress, pleated bodice, with pearls graduating from the top of the skirt. 

The artist reimagined musical and opera within worlds that they have great Interest in. They want to research into elaborate performative costumes, exploring surface decoration and creative pattern cutting as well as creating an aesthetic that is suited to film and opera. They have reinterpreted two texts for a contemporary audience exploring themes of masculine vs feminine, duality, love, passion and religion.

Final year Design and Research Projects

An Installation/play exploring visual storytelling. Althea is hypnotised by Lady Justice, the leader of a fallen dystopian society. Upon travelling to confront the matriarchal figure, she finds herself trapped in a ‘mind cove’ transfused with her own visions and memories.

‘Love is the Greater Labyrinth’ by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is a retelling of an Ancient Greek myth, relocated through this design to the rich cultural and geographical landscape of Mexico.The performance design, located on the Olivier Stage within the National Theatre, draws from symbolism in Ancient Greek and Mayan mythology pertaining to sacrifice and status.

The artist was inspired by German folklore and traditional dress, specifically the elaborate ceremonial headdresses and jewellery which are worn to visually communicate social status and wealth.Their research led them to learn about the spiritual significance of reflective amulets and silver mirrors found in folklore from a range of cultures, often used as clairvoyant tools.

The queen of the Night

Dirty Mary is a movement piece with no dialogue that questions the role of women in regards to virgin Mary’s phallocentric impositions, as it served the interests of men rather than women. With pomegranates, I challenge purity and depravation of sexual desire and passion.

My final costume for Mozart's Opera takes inspiration from dreams and surrealist art, my concept focuses on the otherworldly aspect of The Magic Flute

The final costume created for Mozart&#39;s Opera takes inspiration from dreams and surrealist art, the concept focusing on the otherworldly aspect of The Magic Flute universe. The artist explored the idea of personifying a nightmare, experimenting with texture using velvet fabric, and manipulating it into various lines. The character of the Queen of the Night focuses on power and how that can be portrayed using texture.

Details of the hands and feet of baby Dracon

&#39;&#39;Baby Dracon was born with great power. At just ten months old he was placed on the dragon throne to rule the kingdom...&#39;&#39;Baby sculpted in monster clay. Moulded with Silastic 3481 with a Jesmonite jacket then cast in wax. Chair was purchased then re-designed and developed into a throne using wood work and joinery skills, armrests were sculpted, moulded and casted and painted to replicate wood.

A Bigger Ache is an abridged adaption of Harold Pinter&#39;s radio play A Slight Ache (1959), a play about the aging married couple, Edward &amp; Flora, and their fears of the unknown and paranoias. As the character &quot;The Match-seller&quot; doesn&#39;t have any lines, it isn&#39;t clear whether they are a figment of Edward&#39;s imagination or not, so in this version the first audience is framed as this character, whilst a second audience watches from stalls.
