With the rise of the K-pop industry in East Asia, fangirls there have become an important demographic in entertainment industries, viewing K-pop idols as emotional support or spiritual refuge. However, the obsession has also raised concerns about mental health issues. This study aims to delve into the mental health issues of East Asian fangirls, by using the concept of ‘moths to the flame’ as a design framework and providing support and intervention to promote healthier psychological relationships. Through extensive surveys, in-depth interviews, and social ecological design, this study reveal the emotional experiences of fangirls, the influence of their developmental environment, and potential intervention strategies. Based upon these, the study seeks to spotlight this emerging societal issue, and offer better psychological support for fangirls to achieve balance in self-awareness.
Research and process
