Wellies in the City!

Lily Sainty-Bateman

Growing up in the countryside with a florist mother, constantly being surrounded by plants and botanicals paved the way for much of the inspiration in my practice. My nana taught me to embroider as soon as I could write and so this is not only a skill I have been practicing for many years but also a practice I hold dear to my heart. Threads, fabrics and plants made up my surroundings growing up and so inherently set the seed for this collection. Within my work I explore the relationship between the city and the countryside exploring the tensions and harmony between the two through my use of unconventional, repurposed materials and embroidery.

Clinging onto memories of a playful countryside childhood whilst beginning a new life in the city, this collection explores the merging of the two worlds. Looking at streetstyle and street art and combining them with quaint pieces of the British countryside, creating pieces reflecting the two worlds. The collection also has a strong affinity with family ties, history and treasuring what we already have around us, making use of unconventional waste materials for sustainable solutions and largely using upcycling and deadstock materials to form its pieces. It aims to give typical streetwear archetypes a whimsical twist through unique, functional surface design, using the organic tendency of nature as a safe place within hectic city life.

Final work

look 1- the forager- foraging hoodie, hiker cargos

Look 1 inspired by gardening and outdoor wear, combined with city streetwear archetypes. Trousers are inspired by land girls tying shirts and dungarees round their waist as they worked, merging with hiking trousers and streetwear cargos.

look 2- concrete jungle- tufted, quilted denim jacket, growing jogger and doily top

Look 2 exploring a combination of streetwear and whimsical doilies I associate with my countryside upbringing, including a tufted jacket inspired by plants breaking through the concrete jungle.

look 3- growing graffiti track jacket and biomimicry denim skirt

Look 3 inspired by the principles of biomimicry and the merging of leaves and graffiti to create functional embroidery designs.
