Lumbung Sagu is a creative campaign utilising co-creation within the community of Aimas, Northwest Papua, Indonesia. Lumbung is an Indonesian agrarian term that means ‘‘collective harvest’ or a community’s food barn.
The campaign proposes activations for the young people including recipe innovation with Papuan mamas, a trip to the sagu forest, a co-created board game, and a feast of sagu-based dishes. These are designed in combination with an online Instagram-based lumbung (@lumbung.sagu), all centered towards the sagu tree, a carbohydrate-rich palm-like endemic plant.
Through participatory methods, Lumbung Sagu embraces indigenous knowledges centred on sagu. The project becomes a grassroot-level movement that amplifies the potential of sagu as a staple ingredient, not only in Papua, but also widely in Indonesia.

Community Engagement through Lumbung Sagu
Uncovering the political relations with Indonesian food systems, Lumbung Sagu recovers the powerful role of the sagu tree for the communities of Papua. Collective playful activations are implemented to co-create innovative approaches to how sagu is processed.
