2024 is set to be the biggest voting year in history with over 60 countries across the world hosting national elections, including the UK. A new set of first time voters will hopefully be looking to navigate their values, hopes for the future and demands of those in power.

Unfortunately, only 52% of 18–24 year olds voted in the 2019 general election. Voting apathy, poor education and a lack of communication may be to blame, or simply the outdated and unrewarding system that doesn’t prioritise young people. My enquiry explores this lack of engagement as an opportunity to redefine the ways we can engage first time voters, questioning the impact of design within democracy.

Navigating your Vote acts as an initial point of contact for first time voters, delivering the information and tools needed to confidently navigate and cast their first vote. Provided through familiar posted material, the unbiased campaign aims to improve the standards for voting communication, supporting and proving to young people that their vote is valuable from the very start.

Welcome Package

The Navigating your Vote welcome pack is designed to engage first time voters as they come of age, directly delivering the information needed to navigate the unfamiliar experience. The pack includes a welcome letter, informational booklet, voter checklist and stickers; all narrated by a visual language that communicates voting as a collective effort. All material has been designed to starkly contrast the dull voting material that drops onto our doormats – designing a system with young people in mind.

  • Image shows the first spread of my booklet, with a large arrow made up of crosses. Inside the arrow says 'you never forget your first'.
  • Image shows bright spreads from my booklet as someone flicks through the pages.

Research and process
