'Gunner' is a body of work exploring women's football through a soft and emotive aesthetic. Inspired by the crowds at Arsenal Women's Football Club, this work depicts a feeling of belonging within a sport I never knew could be so embracing.

Final work

  • A zoomed in drawing of a subject's eye, eyebrow and hairline. Creates a sense that the figure is watching something, perhaps talking to somebody.
  • Depicts three characters within a stadium crowd. They are stylish, appear to be waiting for a game to begin.
  • Another zoomed-in depiction of a female face, subjectively, within a crowd. It's a side profile drawn in soft pastels and chalk.
  • A red claw clip on the back of a girl's head. Handwritten text reads "Pint?", suggesting the game has finished.
  • An abstract representation of Highbury and Islington. Fluid ink marks suggest a row of bicycles, a building and an external staircase.
  • A soft, somewhat blurred depiction of two girls in a crowd. One wears a red and white striped Arsenal scarf.
  • A hand-produced reference to the Arsenal badge. Made with black ink, pink oil pastel and pink acrylic paint.
  • A soft, delicate, pastel-coloured portrait of a girl appearing to be looking at something.
  • A somewhat abstract depiction of two changing-room benches alongside a handwritten "Please can I borrow your hairbrush?".
  • A spray - painted tampon box laid flat. Soft, slightly metallic pink in colour.
  • An abstract representation of a face with the word "gunner" handwritten and circled in the centre.
  • A blue and white striped paper bag laid on a baby pink background. Suggests snacks (or sweets).

Research and process

  • An acrylic portrait paired with graphic text reading "GUNNER".
  • Photograph of the artist surrounded by pieces of their work.
  • A spray painted pair of football boots, pink and shiny.
