It’s easier to swipe, sigh and roll yer eyes, than to stop and take the time to feel. We’ve all seen a lot of death recently, and social media has fast become the place to find both victims and perpetrators gliding digitally beside each other, their bubbles colliding casually, daily. FACETS is a multimedia guerilla campaign shedding light on social media’s role in causing widespread emotional desensitisation to violent imagery. FACE FACTS is a publication, a branch of the wider FACETS campaign. It exists in the public space in two senses: online and hidden in newspapers – reminding you that "Violent Media has an Impact on You".

Fighting fear-mongering, starts with you. It requires media literacy, critical thinking and emotional resilience. FACETS can introduce you to some of these ideas. It is our public service. Through posters, through leaflets, through an informative, interactive site, and through word of mouth, FACETS just tries to give audiences a nudge in the right direction. Resensitise yourself.

FACE FACTS Guerilla-style Leaflets

The guerilla aspect of the campaign evolved instinctively. I wanted to engage with the audience in the act of consuming sensationalist news, so sliding leaflets containing information and a designed poster into newspapers just made sense. I could find these at train stations and rely on the audience to distribute the campaign for me. By hiding the leaflets inside newspapers on public transport stations, the media relies on the commuter’s journey to get wherever it needs to be, and it’s impossible to track where it ends up. If they interact, they wilI realise the leaflet also serves as a poster.

FACETS Stickers

The FACETS guerilla campaign really relies on those that interact with it for distribution, be it on purpose or accidentally. Each leaflet comes with it’s own set of stickers, and the audience is encouraged to spread the word. By hiding the leaflets inside newspapers on public transport stations, the media relies on the commuter’s journey to get wherever it needs to be, and it’s impossible to track where it ends up. If they interact, they wilI realise the leaflet also serves as a poster. A bit of free art!
