Sasha Denham

Sasha Denham is a London based costume designer. Her work exists in a fantastical, ethereal world, often drawing from past decades to create modern innovations. Starting with historical patterns, adapting them to create contemporary pieces. With a keen interest in textiles, she often blends traditional techniques, such as dye, painting, felting and knitting applied in obscure ways to create something that feels new.

The Fallen Follies is a modern critique on the treatment and experiences of the 1920's American Showgirls, The Ziegfeld Follies. With my research beginning with a study of their costumes, I was particularly drawn to the ones where they embody symbols of light, as it reflects their status within society at the time. However, the Follies lavish lifestyles were short-lived, as their beauty began to expire, society tossed them aside and replaced them with newer, younger beauties. To reflect this, my visual inspiration focused on old, abandoned chandeliers, hinting at a previous glamorous, luxurious life.
