Profile picture of Hugo Hale

My name is Hugo Hayashi Farnell Hale (Hugo Hale) I am from Oslo, Norway and I am from a multicultural background, my family being Norwegian, English and Japanese. This has given me the opportunity to travel and see different cultures and architecture. I take a lot of inspiration from these countries. I have always been passionate about design and architecture being exposed to it early as a child by my family. this then led me to studying fine art and architecture in oslo and then end up at CSM studying architecture. I have enjoyed my three years of BA Architecture at CSM and it has broaden my horizon to new experiences and stretching my creative abilities. On my course we have been focusing on a more green and renewable approach to architecture and I have enjoyed every bit of it, and I find it very important for the future of architecture. Finding a way to merge Nature with architecture to improve living conditions in urban spaces has been a large part of my project thought the last two years.

In the future I want to focus on renewable architecture where nature is merged within urban spaces.

Rewilding the commons is a redevelopment plan for Cranbrook estate residential building. By redeveloping Harold House in Cranbrook estate, which was designed by Berthold Lubetkin in 1963. The aim will be to create green, flexible living spaces that uses original structures and updates the contemporary living needs.

We are using our homes in more transient and there is a need today for more flexible living spaces. The existing building has a uniform housing typology with rationality in focus. Using the existing structural system to create a more diverse housing modules. The idea is to create spaces that evolves with the user’s needs. As the needs of the family changes over time the space can in some of the housing typologies increase or decrease in size.

Constructing and demolishing buildings is one of the leading polluters globally With my design I want to examine how to reuse and recycle most of the existing building materials for the redevelopment of Harold House. Using existing structure gives it a new context, and an interesting juxtaposition between the old and new structure.

Rewilding Cranbrook Estate will reduce the air pollution and connect urban living with nature. By connecting the site with the nearby Regent canal, will bring in water, introduce new life and plants to the estate to encourage biodiversity.

Ground floor render, inspired by the London penguin zoo by Berthold Lubetkin.

I am bringing in water to site by brining in water from the regents canal. this will help encourage more wildlife and plants to the estate.

A survey from The University of Southern Mississippi, shows that men and women from different cultures and age groups find water features to be a stress reducing agent.
