Julia Labis

Profile picture of Julia Labis
My name is Julia and I am 2022 Central Saint Martins graduate - I studied BA Fashion Design with Knitwear. During my course I developed a range of knitting and crochet skills, learned how to effectively manage a team, as well as be a part of it, and produce interesting work within short time frame.I most enjoy working hands-on on textile and garment development. In my free time I do rock climbing, spend time outdoors and like to learn about history and art.

The aim of my final collection is to explore the connection between time and sustainability.

It is mainly influenced by the theories of liquid modernity by Zygmunt Bauman and my studies in BA Archaeology at University of Warsaw. While studying Archeology I have truly understood the importance of environmental change in our development as species. During that time, inspired by the lectures on Bronze Age, I began researching alternative ways of cultural time perception. As it turns out in my research, our current cultural linear view of time is deeply unsustainable and is a social construct fuelled by capitalistic ideals which led us to the current climate emergency.

I believe that circularity of time could be culturally understood as a repetition of the same action that each time occurs with a slight variation - as if we, societies, were an ever-changing wheel that travels through time rather than a conglomerate of egocentric individuals focused on pursuing the future, bound by laws and regulations.

Final work

FINAL LINEUP

Illustrated final lineup using a mix of digital and manual illustration techniques.

Research and process

Photo shows 5 samples of bioplastic - two crochet samples covered in bioplastic, one knitted sample and two laser cut frames filled with bioplastic.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENTS

Material experiments have been a huge part of the development process and are what I hope to focus on more in the future. Page above shows bioplastic samples that I developed for look 2.

  • Photo shoes a close up of a black woven leather panel pinned to a weaving board.
  • Sketchbook page showing development of knitting patterns based off of soil layers shot from above that resemble solar symbols.
  • Photo shows panels of leggings laying on a table next to each other ready to assemble, forming a pattern piece for leggings.
