Stem Radio + Dune

Dan Patterson

Stem Radio encourages the exploration of new music through physical movement. By orienting the device, Stem Radio scans the frequencies around you, allowing you to navigate these airwaves and discover a diverse range of local genres, artists and shows. Dune utilises real time analogue sound to help mask tinnitus. Microphones within the glass amplify the sound of falling sand to create natural white noise.

Final work

Experience the invisible world of radio in a whole new way with Stem Radio.

Stem Radio

Client project in collaboration with Kano Computing. Experience the invisible world of radio in a whole new way with Stem Radio. By scanning the frequencies around you, this unique device provides a localised sense of the surrounding sounds. Effortlessly navigate through these airwaves by simply orientating Stem Radio in your desired direction. Discover and save tracks throughout the day, curating personalised mixtapes for future listening. Additionally, pin stations you encounter, and they'll be sent to an interactive map for easy revisiting.

Dune utilises real time analogue sound to help mask tinnitus. Microphones within the glass amplify the sound of falling sand to create natural white noise. Dune is an audio-sensory experience. Not only can the user find peace in its sound, but find deeper meditation in observing the sound's source.
