My Project revolves around a machine I have created that uses textile yarn as a new medium for audio recording and playback, with the primary goal being to address the disconnect between fast fashion consumers and garment workers. The machine works using an antique analogue recording technology and I have repurposed it to work with a new medium of conductive yarn.
On the yarn I have recorded the testimonies of Bangladeshi Garment workers that I interviewed talking of their experiences of working within the fashion industry. This audio can then be played back from the yarn itself via the machine that I have built.
This proof of concept highlights the potential for future garments to incorporate the voices of their makers, providing a compelling reminder of the importance of ethical and sustainable fashion practices whilst also showcasing the power of technology to promote transparency and accountability within the fashion industry.
