Carlota dos Santos

Profile picture of Carlota dos Santos

Carlota dos Santos is a Portuguese director, visual and performance artist, and writer based in London. Coming from a background in dance, fine art, and performance, the artist’s work exists in the spaces between Theatre, Fine Art, Performance Art, and Philosophy.

The human being, as both a medium and a research tool, unfolds the core of Carlota’s practice. There is a celebration of the human body within itself and its environment, resulting from a perpetual process of investigation of human nature. Carlota’s work unfolds from the question of how we speak the unspeakable in art. Materiality and physicality are stretched and approached through animate and inanimate bodies present in her work, and large quantities of materials are usually brought to the artist’s live practice. Carlota’s work comes into being as it exists in its complete actuality, through a process where the real is made real.

Some of the artist's work includes Un.being (2020), Absent Matter (2020), There Once I Was, There Will Always Be (2021), A Thousand Shoes (2021), Tempo (2022) in collaboration with Cornelis Joubert, and Porto Seguro (2023).

Porto Seguro was a 52 minutes, one-off stage performance that existed in the fragile space between the speakable and the unspeakable. The piece attempted to blur the boundaries of Dance-Theatre, Fine Art, and Performance Art.

Porto Seguro was a process, a one-off process. A process of possibilities, potentialities, and actual realities. It was time. Time shattered into one single piece of defective natures. And, finally, it was uncertainty. Uncertainty of the importance of each moment. Any absence in the piece was itself a presence. A presence of something that could not be seen, spoken or listened to, but could be felt. A presence of a nothing that became everything. A past, that was itself a present and a future.

Porto Seguro was presented on March 8th at the Platform Theatre in London.
