SIN is a zine that celebrates queerness and aims to break the taboo surrounding sub-groups within the LGBT+ community.
It is first and foremost a love letter tothe community. To complement this approach, we decided that SIN should be a zine. Queer zines were popular during the AIDS crisis, as an act of protest. With the current attack on queer rights, we thought it was fitting that SIN should pay homage to history. The imagery we use is heavily based on the bold, in-your-face stylisation of zines. We wanted the inside of it to be colourful, with some of the pages based on pride flags. SIN’s design is playful and defies the norms of usual magazines, as to be queer is to defy the norm.
SIN was created as a response to the looming threat on trans rights. As England moves to stop the Scottish gender recognition bill in an unprecedented move, and the political landscape becomes more hostile towards queer people in general, we wanted to turn our pain into art. SIN aims to give queer individuals catharsis within the chaos. By bringing in collaborators for articles and inter- views, we gained more insight into the community at large. There is a relief in feeling seen, and SIN aims to embody that. We also want SIN to be educational and to combat misinformation.
