The Bond Between Us

JINGJING WU

In this project, part of my inspiration comes from the blood bond connections within my own family, from my grandmother being a loyal Buddhist and her tendency to overly protect furniture to reflect the subtle mother daughter relationship in Chinese families. I extracted a rectangular piece of clothing from the robe worn by my grandmother, and then associated it with the one-piece baby strap used by mothers to take care of their children. I developed some multi-functional one-piece clothing styles, striving for zero-waste, and connecting clothing details through folding and Chinese buttons. These colors, fabrics, and silhouettes are inspired by wabi- sabi, a traditional aesthetic that focuses on accepting transience and imperfection. The beauty of wabi-sabi is sometimes described as imperfect, unchanging, and incomplete. The concept of wabi-sabi originates from the three Dharma seals of Buddhism, namely impermanence, suffering, and emptiness.

Features include asymmetry, roughness or irregularity, simplicity, intimacy, and the display of natural integrity.
