At the core of Roots and Resilience are the following statements:
- Immigrants are at higher risk of poor green space access (Edge et al., 2023).
- Gardening serves as a bridge to aid immigrants in easing relocation challenges by cultivating their culture through growing produce (Byers, 2009).
------
Roots and Resilience is an augmented reality(AR) application that artistically explores the intersection of immigration, cultural heritage, and access to green spaces in the UK.Green spaces reference gardens, allotments, and community gardens. The app highlights the chayote, a vegetable typically grown in the Caribbean and South America, growing in a confined space. A miniature installation of a green space accompanies the application, showcasing the AR chayote growing within this restricted environment.
Using Blender to create the animation and implementing it within a Swift application, the goal is to display the discomfort caused by the lack of access to green spaces, while highlighting the resilience of immigrants who grow exotic produce to preserve their cultural heritage.
