Miguel Martim's artistic practice primarily focuses on representing non-binary and trans identities, aiming to integrate the visibility of these realities into contemporary art spaces. They interconnect their exploration of the non-binary gender journey with their artistic work in progress and practice, stating, "They are similar things, serving as metaphors for each other."
Their ongoing project, SK1N_00, signifies an evolution of their earlier works, such as “Spectrum” and “Persona.” These projects have critically examined how societal norms permeate all aspects of human life, including gender, beauty standards, and perceptions. In SK1N_00, they develop the concept of screens and monitors as extensions of ourselves, envisioning screens as a contemporary "cyber skin" that we use to "touch" one another. As an artist, they create a new medium and visual language derived from repurposed technology, all viewed through a nonbinary perspective. This work articulates visual statements about nonbinary existence in the binary worlds—digital, composed of 0s and 1s, and analog.
"I am intrigued by deconstructing everyday elements—such as screens—reflecting my process of breaking down, questioning, and reconstructing my identity through healing and experimentation. My approach to developing this into artwork stems from a profound interest in continually researching and experimenting with techniques and materials to realize my vision, ensuring that my work evolves and resonates with commitment and authenticity."
